For a while, I've been noticing something odd. Whenever my site logs ME in as a new visitor (sometimes the blocking cookie gets misplaced or deleted, I think), it shows me coming from Coudersport, Pennsylvania. I've never been there and have no idea where it is. I figured it was something odd with Statcounter, but it just happened on someone else's site.
I guess the IP number shows up as being based there. I figured it was pretty close, but I was wrong. It's over 450 miles from here, in northern Pennsylvania.
So I'm asking the techno-savvy readers out there -- WHY in the WORLD is it showing up like this????

The powers that control the Internet do not allocate IP addresses by geographic location. If a company in Boston gets twenty IP addresses to use, they can delegate those addresses to any field office they want, and the stat counters won't know the difference. Stat counters aren't all that accurate.
Perhaps your ISP is using equipment or IP addresses that was once in Coudersport, and the stat counters' lists just haven't caught up yet.

I figured it was something like that. Odd thing is, sometimes I show up correctly. I guess it depends on the stat counter.

Just checked -- Sitemeter has me listed correctly. It must be a Statcounter thing.

I've noticed differences in accuracy between IP stat products. You're not imagining things. Statcounter, etc., frequently put people on the wrong continent.

That's part of the reason I use two different counters. Actually, I have the code for three (one is a hidden counter), but I haven't looked at the third one in so long I don't even remember the password.
